Overview

The Final Mile ("we," "us," or "our") operates thefinalmile.app. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our service. By using The Final Mile, you agree to the practices described here.

Information We Collect

Account information. When you create an account, we collect your email address and a username you choose. We do not collect your legal name, phone number, or address unless you provide them voluntarily.

Memorial content. When you submit a memorial, we collect the VIN, vehicle details, photos, and any story or obituary you write. This information is stored permanently and displayed publicly.

Payment information. Payments are processed by Stripe. We do not store your card number, CVV, or full payment details. We store a Stripe payment intent ID to confirm payment status.

Stripe Connect. If you enable memorial gifts, you will connect a Stripe account. Stripe collects and stores your banking and identity information directly. We store only your Stripe account ID and account status.

Usage data. We collect standard web analytics including page views, memorial view counts, and interaction counts (cardolences, messages). We do not use third-party advertising trackers.

How We Use Your Information

We use your information to operate the service — displaying memorials, processing payments, delivering notifications, and providing customer support.

We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not use your information for advertising targeting.

Memorial content (vehicle details, photos, stories) is public and may be indexed by search engines. VINs are partially masked in the public interface but are stored in full in our database to support vehicle attrition research conducted through our companion product, How Many Left.

Memorial Gifts

When a visitor leaves a gift on a memorial, the payment is processed by Stripe and routed directly to the memorial owner's connected Stripe account. The Final Mile collects a 5% platform fee. We do not receive or hold the gift funds.

Gift transactions are personal transfers between individuals and are not tax-deductible charitable donations. Recipients are responsible for reporting gift income in accordance with applicable tax laws. Stripe may issue a Form 1099-K to recipients who receive payments above IRS reporting thresholds.

Data Retention

Memorials are permanent by design — they contribute to the vehicle attrition record. If you have a specific request to remove a memorial (privacy concern, incorrect information), contact us at support@thefinalmile.app and we will review it.

Account data is retained while your account is active. If you request account deletion, we will delete your personal information but memorial content may be retained in anonymized form.

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

• Supabase — database and file storage
• Stripe — payment processing and Connect for gift payouts
• Vercel — hosting and infrastructure
• NHTSA — VIN verification via public API

Each of these services has its own privacy policy. We encourage you to review them.

Cookies

We use cookies and local storage to maintain your session and remember your theme preference. We do not use advertising cookies or cross-site tracking cookies.
